STJEPAN PERKOVICS WONDERFUL WORLD OF PAINTING (Kresimir Sego) During the last decade, Stjepan Perkovic has not ceased to surprise us. Being born with cerebral paralysis, he is unable to paint with his arms and thus uses his feet! He paints as well as any other talented artist who has something to say and convey to his audience, using strong expressions and impressive coloration. Mr. Perkovic doesn’t use art as a pastime so as to forget about his handicap; he paints because this is the best way he knows to express himself (including poetry), his world full of questions, doubts, crossroads as well as a world of hope and love. All of Mr. Perkovics paintings are full of passion and fervour, they are the windows of his soul; he tries to show this and pass it on to others. His exhibition is called “Drops of Light”, which perfectly expresses and describes the content of each piece of work. Mr. Perkovics’ paintings are products of these “drops of light” that break out from the frames of each piece, touch the audience and enter their world. His paintings are biblical motives, such as: The Resurrection, The Angel, Baptism of Jesus, Golgotha, The Crucifix and others. Each one of these paintings is sprinkled with calming, encouraging drops of light, which show Mr. Perkovics’ artistic and human strength. We must always have in mind, while looking at his paintings, that his work is a result of multiple efforts. A healthy individual passes and overcomes long and heavy distances using his/her legs but Mr. Perkovic reaches spaces which only art can reach. Another important piece of information that we should know is that, although he is a talented and gifted artist whose work touches you in every way, he has gone even further, and studies the art of painting at the school of renowned professors. This is easily shown in his work and in his approach to art. His paintings are completed, their message is clear; the colours are used in a way so as not to evoke useless effects in the audience. The techniques which he uses - tempera, oil, acrylic, watercolour - confirm that he is the author ho has mastered the art of painting, in spite of his handicap. Observing this exhibition, where thirty of Mr. Perkovics’ paintings are presented, we must believe and remember that illness is not always the winner. He has overcome the cruelty of his illness by painting and having a strong faith. My he always be an example to others! I sincerely hope that we will have the honour of attending many more of Mr. Perkovicis’ exhibitions in the future. |
